Core Work

History

Hycal Energy Research Laboratories Ltd. was formed in 1976 in Calgary, Canada as a specialized research and consulting laboratory focused in the area of reservoir optimization (reservoir engineering). Hycal was acquired by Weatherford International in 2005 and is part of the Weatherford Integrated Laboratory Services Group that includes the recent acquisition of Tesseract Corp, Rotary Labs, Reslab AS, TICORA Geosciences, Humble Geochemical Services and Omni Laboratories. The Weatherford Laboratories group now has 28 laboratory locations world wide to serve the industry.

Expertise

For over 25 years Hycal has developed expertise in the areas of special core analysis, formation damage, phase behavior studies, geological studies and numerical simulation. Our specialized expertise has allowed us to work world wide designing miscible floods, steam floods, gas recycling projects, mitigation of formation damage problems, waterfloods, fracture and completion strategies and a host of other enhanced recovery and reservoir optimization schemes.

We have developed steamfloods in California, South America and Turkey, gas recycling projects in Prudhoe Bay, and extensive enhanced oil recovery work in the U.S.A., South America, the South Pacific, Asia, Africa and in the Alberta Basin. We have also helped mitigate formation damage problems related to horizontal drilling, waterflooding, and fracture and completion strategies in Argentina, Australia, the North Sea, U.S.A. and Canada.

Hycal's staff of Engineers and technologists average close to 15 years of industry experience each. These individuals are dedicated to providing our clients with innovative solutions and knowledge to optimize production or oil and gas recovery.

Research & Development

Hycal has developed leading-edge technology in miscible flood design, overcoming solids precipitation problems and in thermal recovery processes. Our latest technology developments are in helping companies investigate underbalanced drilling options related to horizontal drilling and in measuring reservoir condition interfacial tension (IFT) for use in gas injection processes.

Hycal not only develops new technologies and approaches to problem solving but also offers specialized training to help keep our clients informed of our new technology developments. An extensive compilation of courses and seminars exists to aid in this education process and we are able to provide this specialized service all over the world.
